Srefs Documentation

About srefs

Midjourney style references seeds (srefs) are unique identifies, often referred to as codes, that represent different styles. There are 4.2 billion style seeds, each identified by a unique seed number, such as --sref 12345. The seeds range from 0 to 4294967295. Luckily, we don't need to know all of them! Many are very similar to each other with only minute differences.

Why Use sref codes?

Using an sref code helps you maintain a consistent style across prompts. When you don't use an sref, it's much more challenging to keep a consistent style from one prompt to the next.

Important Information

It's important to know that the style the baseline sref code generates can be molded - most of the time. For example, a baseline style that looks like an illustration can be prompted to generate a photograph. Some srefs are more malleable and some are more stubborn to changes. The best thing to do, when you see an sref that looks promising is to experiment. Run several prompts with multiple different parameters to see what results you get.

Style Reference Categories

I'm categorizing style references codes to help you narrow down and search for specific styles. This is an ongoing process, so you will see more categories over time.

I'm categorizing the styles based on their predominant or influential aesthetics and colors. This is not an exact science. With over 4 billion style reference seeds (codes), each seed can contain a mix of different styles and elements. For example, a seed categorized as watercolor may also include line drawing and neon colors. The nuanced combinations are endless.
